Letter from Dr Azam to UK National Newspapers
10 October 2008
Dear Editor,
I have recently been looking through the meanings of Islamic names and have found out that quite a few current British surnames actually have their origin in the Arabic language.
Most of us are aware that ‘orange’ [‘naranj’] and ‘gazelle’ [‘ghazala’] are from the Arabic. But there are others: ‘Basil’ [as in ‘Basil Brush!’], means ‘brave’; ‘Jeff’ - ‘loveable’; ‘Qaiser’ [German, ‘Kaiser’] - ‘King’; Nu’man [Norman] – ‘blood’; Osman [more of a surname] – ‘Othman’ (the third Caliph of Islam).
The list is even greater for female names and this should be pleasing for the Queen, Prince Charles – and Imran Khan! There is: ‘Dina’ – ‘love’; ‘Eliza’ [itself from Hebrew] – ‘unique, precious’; ‘Janeeta’ [Jane, Janet] – ‘bliss, fertility’; ‘Janah’ [Jane, Janet] – ‘heart, soul’; ‘Jemimah’ – beautiful; ‘Kamille’ [Camilla] – ‘perfect’; ‘Mariya’ [Maria] – pure; ‘Nadia’ – hope and, finally, Zara – ‘as magnificent as the dawn’. Of course, no list can be exhaustive.
In the current political climate of strained relations between extremist Muslims and the west, let us dwell on aspects of our common cultural heritage. Readers may use a search engine and access files of name meanings in the ‘Islamic Names’ section of my Site: http://drumar-azam.weebly.com
Yours faithfully,
Dr Umar Azam
